Gadgets take much of the bore out of traveling. Sitting for hours on a long plane flight isn’t as mind-numbing when you bring some technology. Gadgets are good for children and adults. Having a few gadgets while traveling keeps the mind engaged, and the boring part of the trip doesn’t seem so long.

iPod
The iPod is a device used for audio and video. More expensive iPods play short movies, but the gadget is mostly used as a music player. Depending on the model, the iPod holds hundreds of MP3 files for hours of playtime. When packing an iPod for travel, ensure you’ve not forgotten the power cable. On long trips, the iPod will only last approximately a day. USB cable and power adapters are included with the device to recharge the battery. If you bring a laptop, it’s a perfect source for an iPod battery recharge.

Sony PSP or Nintendo DS
Both these gadgets are portable video game devices. Sony PSP and Nintendo DS devices can keep you busy throughout the entire trip. Nintendo DS is great for puzzles and mind teasers. Nintendo provides memory games and puzzles that are suitable for older gamers. Sony PSP is the best portable video game device for action games. Make sure you pack plenty of games to keep you busy, especially when the trip is long. The PSP can also play multiplayer video games. This option is ideal for parents with multiple children or a group of friends who all own the device.

iPhone
The iPhone has hundreds of games and software to download from the application store. Although gaming on the iPhone isn’t as streamlined and convenient as the PSP and DS, the iPhone offers games that you can’t find on other portable video game players. The iPhone also masquerades as an iPod. It plays music and holds several gigabytes of MP3 files. What makes the iPhone most beneficial is its large screen for web browsing. You can use the iPhone to retrieve email and read your favorite online forum while traveling.

Digital Camera
A digital camera is a gadget requirement for any trip. Gadget geeks who like crisp images aren’t satisfied with blurry cell phone pictures. A digital camera can also be used as a mini storage device. When bringing a digital camera on a trip, don’t forget the adapter that charges the device. Digital camera batteries don’t last very long when the device is used often. If you carry a laptop with you on the trip, bring the USB cable that connects the camera to the computer. It’s a great way to upload pictures and create an image archive of the trip.

Amazon Kindle
The Kindle is a product for digital books. Some print companies offer Kindle versions of books, which provide a digital version of any traveler’s favorite novel. The Kindle is bought directly from Amazon, and you can download books as you finish each novel. The Kindle is great for long plane flights, since wireless phones like the iPhone are required to be powered off. It’s also easier to travel with a Kindle, because it is lightweight and doesn’t take as much space in a suitcase.
The advantage of each of these items is the amount of time each device consumes. A long, tiresome plane or car ride using these gadgets eliminates much of the boredom. The disadvantage of these gadgets is the price tag. Most of them cost several hundred dollars, so the average traveler can only afford one. Although they are expensive, just one of these gadgets will rid you of travel boredom.

Along with many other people, I’ll spend hours flying with young children this holiday season to visit family and, like many parents, I’d do anything within reason to keep my young children busy on a crowded airplane.
I’m a big fan of old-fashioned analog activities—books and crayons—but they’re not enough when you’re cooped up for six hours on a plane. In advance of a cross-country flight on Wednesday, my two kids and I spent several days trying out the most versatile and convenient gadget—offering movies, games and other electronic media—for keeping us entertained.

We looked at Apple’s iPod Touch, a Sony PSPgo and a Nintendo DSi. Sony and Nintendo have updated their PlayStation Portable and DS game players with features aimed at going beyond traditional gaming. Apple is been promoting the iPod touch’s game capabilities.

Nintendo has done a lot to push the boundaries of gaming, with the Wii and other products. But the $169.99 DSi isn’t the entertainment Swiss army knife the iPod Touch and PSPgo are. It doesn’t play movies, for example—a big minus for my 2-year-old son, who is too young to be patient with most games.
It’s still a fun game-player, though, with popular titles for young kids, including two that are big with my 6-year-old daughter: the Nintendogs virtual pet and Pokemon adventure games, which run about $30 a title. One big change Nintendo made to the DSi is the addition of two cameras that are used in fun games, like the ones that put a player’s photo alongside other characters. One simple camera application lets you distort and doodle on images.

Nintendo and Sony also have followed the lead of the App Store—Apple’s online clearinghouse for iPhone and iPod Touch software—by letting users download software directly to the DSi and PSPgo over a Wi-Fi connection. It is more convenient than keeping track of a lot of external game cartridges and discs. Compared with the more than 100,000 titles in the App Store, however, Nintendo’s DSi Shop is sparsely stocked. It had only two free applications and about 90 titles, mostly costing $2 to $8.
One free DSi titles, Flipnote Studio, was a huge hit with my 6-year-old. It let her create an electronic version of an old-fashioned flip book, where you animate sketches by flipping pages. The DSi has only 256 megabytes of built-in storage, good for about a dozen games, though users can expand that with a storage card.

With the $249.99 PSPgo, Sony got rid of the old proprietary disc format for movies and games used in older PSP models, replacing it with 16 gigabytes of built-in flash storage onto which users can download games, movies and other content. The change allowed Sony to make a sleeker device with controls that slide away under its crisp color display.

The iPod Touch is still slimmer and easier to tuck into a pocket. A model with eight gigabytes sells for $199, while one with 32 gigabytes sells for $299.
The PSPgo’s display is slightly wider than that on the iPod Touch, but isn’t touch-sensitive. Still, the PSPgo and iPod Touch are fine for watching movies. They’re more convenient on airplanes than fumbling with a laptop and DVDs. And users can wirelessly download movies and games onto the PSPgo from Sony’s online PlayStation Store. I found it faster, though, to do the transaction on my PC over a wired Internet connection, and load the material onto the PSPgo over a USB cable with Sony’s version of Apple’s iTunes application, called Media Go. Media Go runs only on Windows.

Prices for movies on the iTunes and PlayStation Stores were mostly the same at $14.99 for new releases and $9.99 for older ones. Rentals are $3.99. Both stores had a similar selection of new releases, but the PlayStation Store lacked some kid titles that were on iTunes, such as “Toy Story.” There is also a directory of free podcasts on iTunes that makes it easy to download free videos to the iPod Touch, including kid-friendly material such as NASA space-shuttle landings and “Sesame Street” clips.
Games for PSPgo tend to be more intricate than those for iPod Touch, but that comes at a price. While Sony sells cheaper games, many are in the $19 to $30 range. I liked an adventure game called “Little Big Planet” starring a character called Sack Boy—for $39.99.

That price is steep compared with all the inexpensive and free content on the App Store for the iPod Touch. My kids liked a lot of it: a free dress-up game called “Dress Chica” and a $1.99 snowball-fight game called “Grinchmas.” My son particularly loved a free, beautifully illustrated short book called “Voodoo Doll’s Halloween Story.” My 6-year-old spent hours with a free math-drills program.
I found the iPod Touch offers the best entertainment options for young kids at bargain prices. And that is a gift for parents.

So you’ve been playing the Facebook game Mafia Wars and you’ve become addicted. Your Internet time now revolves around your energy refills. You’ve even gotten up at 2 am to get a headstart on the next level.
Here are the tips you need to get the most out of the game.

Untraceable Cellphone

The first time you hit a roadblock will be when your job requires an Untraceable Cellphone. You probably had a number of them stored up and you didn’t notice that it was a requirement of the job. But all of a sudden, the cellphone square goes red saying you have none left.
You can stock up on these items in the New York Enforcer section. If you look at the possible loot from the “Rob an electronics store” job, you’ll see that one of the items is the cell phone you need. This concept of requirements will be used many times in higher jobs.

How Not to Get Robbed

Robbing has been discontinued in the Mafia Wars, but they still sell items that can only be used for robbing, so keep your options open. The popular question is “how not to get robbed.” And the answer is “don’t be there.” Robbing only occurs in New York. So when you can, escape to Cuba after ending your actions. Your name won’t show up on the Rob list.

Allocating Award Points

Put most of your award points into Energy and Stamina. Energy lets you do more jobs and get experience, so you want it to be as high as you can. The higher the job, the higher the experience you’ll get. Stamina is important because you actually get more experience per award point here. And you need to fight because you get some cool items here that you can’t get doing jobs.

Send Energy Packs Daily

Most people don’t send out Energy Packs. They wait until they receive a pack to return the favor. So if you want to receive them, make sure you send them out. The button is hidden on the Home page.

Use the Bank

Yes, it takes 10% off the top. But it’s the best way to protect your money. If you don’t bank your money, you’ll risk losing it when people attempt to fight you. So either heap points in your defences or use the bank.

Each Job Tier Has 3 Levels

You need to do each of the 3 levels of mastery to get the super cool bonuses at the end.

Collections and Vault

Vaulting a collection gets you some really cool items so do what you can to get a complete set. Make sure to use your wish list. Your friends can help. Make sure to help them for the return favor.

Give Gifts

This is the best way to get things back, whether energy, a luxury yacht or a gold poker chip. And make sure you send things to your wife. Often.

We told you there’d be a new, slimmer PlayStation 3. Now, the slimmed down, pumped up revamp is finally here and it doesn’t disappoint. First and foremost, the PS3 Slim is cheaper: the launch price will be below 20k. It’s also a third smaller and lighter than the hulking previous version, and a third more energy-efficient, meaning slightly lower running costs and, more importantly, near-silent operation as minimal fan work is required to keep it cool. The Slim has gained a 120GB hard drive and exchanged the fingerprint-magnet gloss finish for a matt one. The gauche, ugly Spiderman font is gone too, replaced by a new, embossed PS3 logo on both top and bottom.

Furthermore, Sony has dropped the touch sensitive power and eject sensors, ending the frustration of waving your finger to no avail. Instead, there are proper, old-fashioned buttons with an agreeably clicky action. The on/off switch on the back has also been done away with, so you’ll need to switch it off at the socket.

There are some cool new ways of controlling the PS3 Slim. Plug it into a Bravia Link-capable Sony TV and you can navigate the PlayStation’s Xross Media Bar menu with the TV’s remote; it’s ideal for watching Blu-rays. It even powers down the PlayStation when you switch the TV off. If you’re out and about, you can still get all your PS3’s movies, pictures and music using this PSP; you’ll also be able to access it from certain Sony Ericsson phones.

The Aino will be the first mobile to feature Remote Play, as on the PSP, bringing up the same menu on the mobile’s screen. Just log in over a Wi-Fi network and you would’ve an entire hard drive’s worth of entertainment, without the need for a phone the size of a microwave. There is one major niggle with the new PS3: it won’t play PS2 games, although some PSOne titles will work. There are also litanies of minor caveats: it only has two USBs, is no longer compatible with Linux, doesn’t come with an HDMI cable thrown in, and you’ll have to shell out extra on a stand to make it sit upright. We really doubt those are deal-breakers, though.

In all, the Slim is a big improvement: cheaper, smaller, quieter and more efficient, with new features that further expand its appeal, both as a gaming and lifestyle device. It also has a killer back catalogue, forthcoming titles including Band Hero, FIFA 10 and Red Dead Redemption. A video store arrives in 2010 and – a bit of a killer app, this – BBC iPlayer is now supported. So, game over? Well, maybe not, given Microsoft has just slashed the price of an Xbox 360 Elite to a mere 19k. Even so, in this slimmed-down, cut-price guise, Sony’s PS3 has never looked more affordable or alluring.

Specifications
On the back you’ve got (left to right) Ethernet, HDMI out, optical audio out, AV out and AC power
First verdict
Eric Bratcher, Ed in Chief of PlayStation: The Official Magazine
The redesigned PS3 wasn’t a surprise, but we still tore into its packing like shipwrecked sailors who’d found a crate of Scotch. The low profile le is a definite improvement. It’s much smaller than it looked in the photos, although actually a tad deeper front-to-back. Some say the matt finish looks cheap, but at least it wasn’t caked in fingerprints within five minutes like the old,
glossy exterior. It’s also notably quieter than the already near-silent previous model. Internet sleuths have ferreted out an FCC fi ling for a 250GB version, but any other changes from here on will likely be tweaks under the hood – oh, and maybe Sony will one day stop packing it with the same low-grade composite video cable that shipped with the original PlayStation back in 1995. If you don’t have a PS3 already, buy this immediately. It’s smart,
fresh, and the only place to play Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, MAG and The Last Guardian.

If you are a fan of Pokemon then you’ve probably already heard that Nintendo is remaking Pokemon Gold and Silver with the new names Heart Gold and Soul Silver. But what Nintendo didn’t announce until last Sunday was the fact they are enhancing the game with the addition of a walking meter.

The little device is being called the PokeWalker and will come bundled with both versions of the game. It is meant to be carried with you wherever you go and interfaces with your DS and Pokemon game via infrared. What you can do is upload one of your Pokemon to the device and take it with you. By walking around that Pokemon then gains experience and affection for their owner.

The walking around also stores up “watts” that get generated from your footsteps. They can be used on your DS to help capture wild Pokemon. So walking around a lot will mean you can do better in the game therefore creating a direct link between playing and exercise.

The potential sales of these two remakes just went through the roof. You are basically getting the equivalent of a Tamagotchi gadget bundled with each title so kids will want them. But parents will view this as encouraging their kids to walk around and get some exercise making it an easier decision to buy. Knowing Nintendo there will probably be some key differences between the two PokeWalkers requiring kids scream at you until you buy them both games.
So when this game gets a release in the West (Japan get it in the Fall), not only will you have to Catch ‘em all, but you now have to Walk ‘em all too. What another great idea from Nintendo.
